Bentley S1 Sports saloon (1958)

The S-series Bentleys were the last to be hand-made on a separate chassis. Approximately 3000 standard S1 Sports Saloons were produced over 1955-59. It was the last car to use the straight 6-cylinder engine dating from the 1920’s but they are nevertheless good for over 100 mph and return 16 mpg. The independent suspension and power steering provide excellent road-holding for a car over 60 years old.

This car (Vin B476FA) was registered on 6th June 1958 and has had 6 owners, one being the Coroner for Durham and one who exported it to Ireland over 1997-2005. The 4.9 litre engine (BF238), automatic gearbox, dynamo, starter, electrics and radio were all refurbished 5 years ago after which it was virtually unused. Following recent body repair, a lower half respray and a major service after 119k miles it is ready to tackle the next 60 years. It drives superbly and issues no black smoke. It participated in a local classic car rally in late April this year and performed well over the 150 miles of varied roads winning its owner a prize.
