Mercedes Benz Gwagen three-door 300 GES automatic (1991)

Fantastic example of the evergreen G-wagen.
Many vehicles have been called iconic but few of them are actually worthy of the description. This is undeniably one of them.

The Mercedes Geländewagen – literally “country car” or off-road vehicle – has one of the longest production runs of any vehicle, is still in production in Austria where it was always made, comes in a bewildering variety of options and has been ordered in quantity by military and other government services all around the globe. There is a commitment to NATO that G-wagens will continue to be made up to 2025. If anything “does what it says on the tin” it is this no-nonsense, tough all-rounder 4WD with not one but three differential locks. Yet, step inside, and it’s certainly not your usual workhorse environment. It’s as cosseting as any Mercedes of the 1990s can be (and very familiar too).

This is a 1991, three-door 300 GES automatic. So, it has the smaller 3-litre straight-six petrol engine, 170bhp, in the SWB body with an auto box, permanent 4WD, ABS and a low ratio for off-road. It is in metallic blue with stainless surround wheel cover. The body is in super condition (these cars can rust) and has not been tarted up in any way. The alloy wheels are excellent too, showing only minor marks, and wear good tyres (mainly Michelin). Inside, the seats are covered in an immaculate pale, diagonally ribbed cloth and floors are covered with pale carpets and M-B rubber mats, while the dash has nice zebrano wood highlights. There is a working electric slide and tilt sunroof, electric front windows and a Blaupunkt Atlanta radio/cassette. A tow hook has been fitted. Access to the rear seats is very easy because the whole front seat lifts forward, not just the seat back.

This G-wagen has had four owners, the last two for over five and thirteen years respectively. It has a confirmed mileage of a little over 71k with plenty of MoT certificates and service history to prove. The maintenance booklet shows regular services up to 66k (eleven in total, all bar two at official M-B dealers in Inverness, Perth and Grangemouth). The last owner from December 2011 is an employee of the official M-B dealer in Lothian and Borders and has carried out maintenance himself as required. Documents include owner’s manual, the aforementioned maintenance booklet, vehicle data cards, r/c operating instructions, dealer network book, etc, ie what you would have been given when the car was new. The current MoT expires in November 2017.

This is an amazing opportunity to acquire a practical, modern classic which, if kept in the manner of previous owners and used carefully, should maintain its value for years to come. A new one will cost an eye-watering sum of money. This is excellent value by comparison.
